Everyday Situations For Which You Might Need A Lawyer

Personal and Business Services

For example, if you want to buy or sell your home, you don’t have the time to worry about the legalities of it all; you want someone you can trust to take care of all the legal angles so you don’t have to worry about them. Think about it; your home is the largest investment you are likely to make in your lifetime and yet many people make the mistake of saving what amounts to less than one tenth of one percent of the purchase price by not retaining an attorney. Things as simple as negotiating what appliances and ceiling fans stay with the house or whether you should receive a monetary credit for the leaky faucet or cracked tile are best left to someone not emotionally involved in the transaction such as a real estate attorney.

So you bought that condo and now you have no idea what to do with the neighbor who blocks your driveway. Or you don’t like the color your neighbor painted his door. Maybe you are concerned about the special assessment to replace all the windows. These are real-world scenarios that are best left to experienced lawyers. By the way, how much money should your association have held in reserves? What is the highest amount you can raise assessments in a year as allowed by Illinois law? Again, an experienced lawyer can help you with these potential problems.

Likewise, if you have a great business idea there are many reasons why you want to set up a corporation. You should worry about opening your business while I can incorporate your business idea. Incorporation can protect you and your personal assets so that you can focus on your calling without anxiety.

Often, people do not bother to plan for their future, often to disappointing results. I can help you and your family set up your collective futures by drafting estate documents such as wills, living wills, and powers of attorney for both healthcare and property. Simply, you may think you are too busy, too young, or too healthy to worry about this now, but if you truly want to control your own destiny and your financial future, this relatively inexpensive service can save many dollars and much grief.

We all make mistakes and sometimes they involve traffic offenses, such as DUI or a moving violation. Knowing how the system operates can save your driving privileges and protect your reputation, family, and employment.

Occasionally, despite our best efforts, people with whom we associate, either personally or professionally, fail to live up to their agreements. Sometimes, money is involved. At any rate, there are situations where we need to utilize the court system, or at least the negotiating abilities of a lawyer to help resolve our disputes.

Let’s face it; people die. At some point all of us are touched by a friend’s or relative’s death. These are often the times when we are least-equipped to deal with the legalities of the situation. We don’t know what to do about filing a will nor do we really understand how to go about transferring the deceased person’s property. Having a lawyer you trust can help you through a confusing situation.

Everybody Hurts:

Automobile crashes occur. Sometimes, they are your own fault and often they are somebody else’s fault. If you get hurt and it is someone else’s fault, make sure you hire a lawyer who understands the complex and often arcane world of this area of the law. Going it alone can cost you money and prolong your pain. Simply making the mistake of giving a statement to an insurance company or failing to understand what the legally applicable statute of limitations is can prevent you from recovering anything.

Work injuries happen and are not limited just to “blue collar” workers! Countless jobs today have workers “out in the field” delivering things, showing samples, and otherwise exposing themselves to potential injury. In fact, I once represented the C.E.O. of a corporation who ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee simply turning around to answer an employee’s question while unpacking a box of delivered items. This area of the law in Illinois is complex, full of jargon and esoteric procedural hoops. Unless you know the workers’ compensation area well, you are likely to be taken advantage of by the insurance company for your employer. Remember, insurance companies work for your employer; not you.

We do trip and fall from time to time. Everybody does. Most of the time, we get up cursing our own clumsiness and feel fine soon after. Sometimes, though, we are actually injured and it is because someone or entity did not keep their sidewalk in good repair, or negligently failed to clear ice or snow properly, or left a television hanging in a school where it could fall onto a child. This is another area of the law that is quite confusing and specialized. For those times where you are really hurting and something beside your own clumsiness caused your pain, you should contact a lawyer to discuss what can be done to compensate you.

Products malfunction and medical professionals make mistakes. While these are rare occurrences, there are times when we are all touched by the baby crib that collapses, the lead paint on your child’s toy, or the surgical procedure that goes awry beyond the anticipated risks. Again, these are things none of us wants to think about and yet, if these things affect our lives, we realize we know very little about what to do or how to proceed.
